Flexible hoses are everywhere in modern homes. They’re cheap, easy to install, and bendy, but that convenience comes with risks and potential cost if you’re not careful. Here’s what you need to know:
What Are Flexible Hoses & Why Everyone Likes Them
Sometimes called flexi-hoses, braided hoses, flexible connectors.
Used under sinks, dishwashers, laundry tubs, toilets and anywhere you need a bendy connection rather than a rigid copper or hard pipe.
They’re made with a rubber inner hose material, wrapped in braided steel or stainless steel, with fittings at both ends.
Pros: they are a low cost, low labour, flexible fit, that are good for retrofits or tight spaces. And the cons….
The Downside: Decay, Damage & Big Repair Bills
Despite the wins outlined above, flexible hoses have a number of drawbacks that you need to be aware of, including:
Rubber inner lining can degrade over time due to temperature changes, water quality, and general wear and tear.
Steel braiding can rust or corrode.
Fittings can fray, crimp, or get twisted/kinked.
If they fail, lots of water escapes fast, often before you can get to it.
These are not ‘if’ risks, but ‘when’ risks, especially if the hoses are neglected.

How Big is the Problem in Australia?
Here are recent stats and insights:
Metric | Value |
|---|---|
Share of home water damage claims due to burst flexi-hoses (Suncorp, 2024) | 1 in 10 water damage claims. (1) |
Average cost of a burst flexi-hose insurance claim | Over AUD $27,500. (2) |
% of flexi-hoses inspected that needed replacing | ~30% — roughly two per home in many cases. (3) |
Lifespan quoted by industry and manufacturers | Generally, 5–10 years (some last longer, some fail faster depending on quality, environment). (4) |
Proportion of water damage claims attributed to flexi-hoses historically | In 2016, flexible braided hoses (flexible connectors) accounted for ~22% of water damage claims in Australian households. (5) |
Some extra flavour:
A six-month study by Suncorp (covering many homes) showed that 30% of flexi-hoses inspected were at risk, rust, corrosion, fraying, or twisting were frequent problems. (6)
The cost and damage tend to spiral in open‐plan homes (water spreads), multi-level and when homes are vacant (e.g. during holidays). (7)
Many homeowners are unaware that flexi-hoses need to be replaced, often until its too late. (8)
One scary stat: A burst flexi-hose left undiscovered for 24 hours can release enough water to fill a household swimming pool (~61,000 litres). (9) Due to this fact, along with the other potential damage, insurance companies are more aware of flexible hoses now, issuing warnings, new advice, and raising awareness among homeowners. (10)
And whilst there isn’t exhaustive data on the full cost of flexible hoses causing damage across all of Australia, the evidence and our firsthand experience at Happy Plumbing shows it is best to use preventative measures, to reduce a problem that won’t go away on its own and will continue to increase insurance premiums and costs when left to chance.
Replacement & Maintenance: What to Look For
Here’s how to stay ahead of the game:
At a minimum, replace flexible hoses every 5 years or as per the manufacturer’s warranty, noting that it isn’t always easy to identify who the manufacturer is if the labels are removed during initial installation.
Check hoses visually every 6–12 months. Look for rust, corrosion, fraying, bent/kinked braiding and twisting. If any of these are found, call Happy Plumbing and we will take care of the replacement.
Avoid cheap hoses with poor fittings or cheap steel. Quality materials matter.
Make sure installation is done properly including correct fitting, avoiding tight bending and no strain, as well as not overtightening connectors.
Turn off water when going away for extended periods.
What Homeowners & Insurers Should Know
Many insurance policies may deny claims if hoses aren’t properly maintained, are visibly corroded, or if damage is due to wear & tear and not sudden failure. (11)
Keep records where possible including when was it installed? What brand? Any inspections or replacements? This helps if there’s a claim.
Choosing premium hoses with better warranties helps reduce risk.
